The du Mauriers visited Cornwall for holidays throughout Daphne's childhood, but it was not until 1926 that the family decided to look for a second home there. She had a close relationship with her father and it was him who encouraged her when she began writing stories and poetry at an early age.

She grew up in London with her sisters Angela and Jeanne and was educated at home by her governess. Born on the 13th May 1907 Daphne du Maurier was the second daughter of Sir Gerald du Maurier and the grand daughter of George du Maurier.
